Water Flow and Erosion Planning for Your Land
Water goes where the terrain sends it. The Water Story maps flow paths, catchments and likely pooling so you can plan around them instead of discovering them after a storm.
Who it is for
- Owners who see soil washing downhill or gullies starting after heavy rain
- Homesteaders with a wet corner, a soggy pasture or a driveway that washes
- Anyone deciding where to build, plant or graze on sloping ground
Questions it helps answer
- Where does runoff concentrate on my property?
- Which areas collect water and stay wet?
- How much water could move across the land in a normal storm and a severe one?
- Where might water be slowed and spread before it causes damage?
What is included
Includes the full Foundational Topographic Map & Land Assessment — terrain, elevation, contours and soil.
- Flow accumulation across the whole siteWhere every drop of rain ends up as it moves downhill.
- Watershed / catchment mappingWhich areas of your land drain to which low points.
- Flow-direction arrows and pooling / flood zonesThe paths water takes and the low ground where it collects.
- Storm-runoff estimates for real storm eventsSized where water leaves your site, for both an average storm and an extreme one.
Not included
- Engineered stormwater, drainage or culvert design
- Guaranteed erosion remediation or flood protection
- Water-rights, wetland or floodplain determinations

Limitations to know
- Runoff estimates are modeled from terrain and public soil data. Real behavior depends on ground cover, compaction, frozen soil, drains and culverts that a terrain model cannot see.
- Treat flow paths as places to observe in the next heavy rain, not as final answers.
- Any work in or near streams, wetlands or shared drainage may need local permits and professional review.
Common questions
- Will this stop my erosion problem?
- It shows where water concentrates so you can make better decisions. It is not an engineered fix and does not guarantee outcomes.
- Can you design my culvert or drainage system?
- No. Engineered drainage design is outside EarthDesign's scope and requires a licensed professional.
